about

This piece was recorded in one take in September 2016 as part of the admission process of the experimental music festival One Drone Day and was finally selected among the many proposals to be performed live on November 13th of that same year. Recorded straight into a 4-channel portable recorder and intended to be played and heard in quadraphonic sound, this improvisation is based on a field recording I made on a cold august morning during the southern winter of 2016 in Argentina. It was created as a kind of sound meditation based on the exploration of the minimum: a few musical notes, a musical box, a contact microphone, a rubber band simulating the pizzicato of a violin, elements that I later processed in the moment with guitar pedals and a computer. The idea that I proposed to myself is that there should be no type of subsequent editing, since these ideas should be able to be recreated from scratch in a live performance.

Generally when I listen to music I like to pay attention to the sound environment that surrounds me, since I think it is an important part of that particular moment. Sometimes it is the noise of cars in the city or the voices that mix with what we hear. This time it was the many birds that abound in the suburbs of my hometown and that can be heard in the background, like when we listened music with an open window and the sounds intermingle.

Ciro Berenguer Barcelona, Spain

My work as a composer is influenced by different musical traditions and genres: from European contemporary music to jazz and folk, to south American and African rhythms. I use these elements to create my own compositions which sound in a way like chamber music. Lately I’ve been adding layers of field recordings and electronics using my laptop for composing and as a live instrument. ... more
